When someone joins a sports club, it’s not just a name on a list. The Finnish Associations Act clearly defines how members are admitted, how they can resign, and how the membership register must be maintained. Member management is the foundation of every association-based club.
That’s why it’s not just a practical task – it’s a statutory responsibility. Here are four reasons why it’s worth taking seriously.
- Legality and fairness: According to the Associations Act, every association must keep a register of its members. The register must include each member’s name and place of residence, and it must be kept up to date. Many types of club funding are based on membership numbers. The Act does not recognize forced membership.
- Member data and communication: A club’s activities are often intended for its members. When member information is accurate, communication and marketing are easier. Annual meeting invitations must be sent to members, who have the right to vote on the matters being decided.
- Membership fees as revenue: Membership fees can be a significant source of income for a club. Collecting them is straightforward when the membership register – and thus the membership list – is in good order.
- Transparency and data protection: Finns are increasingly aware of their personal data and how it’s managed. Members have the right to know whether their membership is still valid or not. Do you know yourself how many sports clubs you might still unknowingly belong to?
